With its administrative centre in Mossman, 75 kilometres north of Cairns, Queensland’s Douglas Shire Council used 934 megawatt hours of GreenPower electricity in 2005, around 20 per cent of the Shire’s electricity use. This is equivalent to powering 144 households a year*.

“Douglas Shire is unique with 82 per cent of the Shire within the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area,” explained Douglas Shire Council Sustainability Officer, Maree Grenfell. “We are committed to and are recognised for upholding strong values regarding the protection of our beautiful natural environment.”

The Shire’s population of more than 11,000 people is dwarfed by its one million visitors each year to the nationally and internationally renowned tourism destinations, Port Douglas and the Daintree National Park.

“The Council is committed to sustaining a balance between economic growth and the biodiversity of the natural environment,” explained Ms Grenfell.
