GreenPower fee exemption for renewable hydrogen projects
GreenPower exempts renewable hydrogen producers from GreenPower program fees until and including 2030 to support the renewable hydrogen sector.
Renewable hydrogen production through electrolysis uses large amounts of electricity. Accreditation of the electricity supply is important to establish that renewable hydrogen producers purchase the required certificates and customers can trust that the hydrogen was made using renewable energy.
Hydrogen producers that use 100% GreenPower are eligible to be exempt from GreenPower fees through GreenPower’s Corporate Direct product. The fee exemption was agreed by the National GreenPower Steering Group in 2022 and aligns with hydrogen support policies and programs of the Australian Government, states and territories, such as the NSW Hydrogen Hubs program that requires grant recipients to purchase GreenPower accredited electricity. The exemption is available to hydrogen projects across all Australian jurisdictions.
The proposed GreenPower program fee exemption will reduce the cost of renewable hydrogen production. For example, a hydrogen project with a 10MW electrolyser can save approximately $100,000 by the end of 2030. This material cost reduction will contribute towards making renewable hydrogen competitive with fossil fuels.
