GreenPower launches its Renewable Gas Certification for businesses

The Renewable Gas Certification's key objective is to support decarbonisation in Australia by displacing fossil natural gas use in hard-to-abate sectors with low-emissions renewable gas. The pilot will certify biogas, biomethane and renewable hydrogen projects in Australia and allow them to create renewable gas certificates that can be sold to commercial and industrial gas users. These business customers can match their fossil natural gas use with low-emission renewable gas by purchasing the certificates. This also directly supports renewable gas production in Australia.  

The certification is using the established Green Gas Certification Scheme registry platform for registering Australian renewable gas projects and tracking the status of certificates. In the registry, Producers will be able to create and transfer certificates, which can be purchased by gas users. The registry platform is owned by Renewable Energy Assurance Limited. 

The Malabar Biomethane Injection Plant is scheduled to become the first renewable gas facility registered under the certification. The Malabar project is using biogas from wastewater to produce biomethane, and injecting it into the NSW gas distribution network. This is an Australian-first project operated by Jemena Gas Networks with support from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency.
