GreenPower is a government accreditation program that enables your energy provider to purchase renewable energy on your behalf.
The program was developed in consultation with the energy industry and various non-government organisations including the Australian Consumers Association, Greenpeace, the Australian Conservation Foundation and the World Wide Fund for Nature.
The aims of the program are to:
- Facilitate the installation of new renewable energy generators across Australia beyond mandatory requirements;
- Encourage growth in consumer demand for renewable energy;
- Provide consumer choice for, and increase consumer confidence in, credible renewable energy products; and
- Increase consumer awareness of renewable energy and greenhouse issues.
The participating renewable energy generators generate electricity from sources like mini hydro, wind power, solar, biogas and biomass, which produce no net greenhouse gas emissions.
Because GreenPower meets the highest environmental standards, the 'tick' logo is used to indicate the renewable energy you are supporting is the best choice for the environment.
When you choose to buy a GreenPower product, the small premium you pay in addition to your electricity account each day is invested in the renewable energy sector. Between 2008 and 2011 GreenPower raised between $80M and $88M p.a. consistently, and purchased between 20 - 25% of the purchase of Large-scale Generation Certificates (previously Renewable Energy Certificates) in Australia.
The GreenPower program organises publicly available independent auditing of energy retailers' sales and purchases, so when you buy GreenPower, you know your money is being invested back into the renewable energy sector. To access quarterly reports and annual audits from GreenPower click here.
