Findings from GreenPower’s 2022 consultation about renewable gas certification
We received 34 submissions in response to the proposed design and eligibility rules for the Renewable Gas Certification Pilot.
The Renewable Gas Certification Pilot aims to help establish a voluntary market for renewable gases in Australia.
A public consultation was carried out in early 2022 seeking input on the design of the new certification. The consultation informed our work on the appropriateness, feasibility, and any unintended impacts of different elements of the proposed Pilot’s design.
The submissions to the consultation also can be found here.
Feedback received from the 34 submissions has been considered in the development of the Pilot Rules. The Rules set out how the Pilot will work, including:
- objectives of the Pilot
- terms and conditions
- eligibility and accreditation criteria
- what renewable gas certificates look like
- the online registry platform
- fees, auditing, and reporting.
A consultation summary paper has been published which describes how various feedback and suggestions have been used to optimise the Pilot design. The paper can be downloaded here.
We are now getting ready to start operating the certification in the second quarter of this year. This means we will begin accrediting renewable gas projects and go live with the certificate registry platform. Commercial gas users will soon be able to start buying certificates to reduce their emissions.
The Pilot Rules, guidelines, factsheets, and other documents will be made available on the GreenPower website soon. They explain how the Pilot works and how renewable gas producers, certificate traders, and customers can participate.
Renewable gas producers and gas customers can now express interest in participating in the Pilot. Contact us if you’d like to discuss your participation.
